Dear God - someone pass the mind-bleach
And I thought the mental image of (the late) gnome-like Robin Cook with his (then) secretary was bad enough, or gravestone-toothed David Mellor with that horse-faced model woman in his Chelsea strip. But oh no - Labour can always go one better... I mean, PRESCOTT of all people? The standards of 40-something secretaries really have slipped, haven't they? AND he didn't even have the decency to do it in the back of one of his two jags, but his Whitehall flat. (That's the one paid for by the taxpayers, rather than the one he failed to pay Council tax on...)
Update: It's just sunk in how utterly screwed the government should be over all this. I mean, in just the last week we've had:
the ongoing loans for peerages/contracts crisisAnd God alone knows what else I've missed. Do they actually WANT to get wiped out at the local elections next week?
flogging Eurofighter jets to the human rights-light Saudi regime
cock-ups over calculating NHS debt
£7,000 spent on the PM's wife's hair
threats of NHS strikes
revelations that new troops deployed to Afghanistan will have insufficient air support
revelations that a bunch of people who should have been deported haven't been
the resignation of the Chief Executive of the NHS / Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health
the Health Secretary under pressure to resign
the Home Secretary under pressure to resign
yet ANOTHER overpayment of tax credits, threatening to destroy yet more hard-up families as they are forced to repay them
the Deputy Prime Minister having an affair

You've missed off DEFRA (and the utterly, miserably incompetent Lord Bach) screwing up farm payments so completely that the EU are going to have to get involved.
But who cares, eh? Farmers? They're all toffs who stuff themselves with foie gras while hunting striking miners and go haw, haw, haw when they laugh. Lambing season? Never heard of it.
What has always stunned me about this government is, given their reputation for being spin-obsessed control freaks, just how useless they are at spinning stuff or controlling anything.
but his Whitehall flat. (That's the one paid for by the taxpayers, rather than the one he failed to pay Council tax on...)
I thought that that was the one that he hadn't paid Council Tax on? And it is now the one that, for Council Tax purposes, is his primary residence because the CT is twice as much in Hull...

They say a nation gets the government that it deserves.
As the cruise missiles rain in on this shambles of a government, and no amount of spin, resignations, assurances or just plain ingoring the problem will make it go away, ask yourself this: What alternative is there? Dave "nice but....well actually, not nice at all"?Ming the Clueless? BN....no,lets not even go there-might be a bit scary for a month or two but serious threat- no)Anyone else? anyone? Monster Raving Loonies? Robert Kilroy-Smug?The reason they have got away with it for so long is a complete lack of credible opposition. Now the facade crumbles around them, and they scramble around for a way out, someone to blame (new initiative ahoy!!!) we are going to be left with a fatally wounded government eventually giving way to another combination of dangerous, incompetent self serving toadies subservient to Bush, and big business.Sobering thought, ain't it?
I'd quite like a government that was too weak and wounded to lie and hide the truth for year after year, and had to live in and respond to reality. What would that look like, I ask you? What if matters were raised in Parliament and the ministers properly investigated them like the public servants they're supposed to be, rather than bungling, whitewashing, and pretending to serve a wise agenda? What are they trying to achieve?
