- That's one more decent, respectable former Labour minister gone then. Good man, Tony Banks. Wrong on a lot of issues and had an irritating voice, but a good man nonetheless.
Utterly unrelatedly, the Britblog Roundup is up.

I thought he was a bit of a bigot. After one of the elections he had a go at (James)Goldsmith for having the temerity to field referendum candidates, accusing him of bribing the electorate.Bribing-just by offering other candidates, not offering money for votes,or bread and circuses. It just shows how these politicians like a stitchup about the EU.
Banks probably was honest by his lights. That doesn't stop him being - in the real world - a superannuated fool, a dictatorial bigot and a useless minister.
No loss whatsoever.

EDM 1255: PIGEON BOMBS 21.05.04
Banks/Tony
That this House is appalled, but barely surprised, at the revelations in M15 files regarding the bizarre and inhumane proposals to use pigeons as flying bombs; recognises the important and live-saving role of carrier pigeons in two world wars and wonders at the lack of gratitude towards these gentle creatures; and believes that humans represent the most obscene, perverted, cruel, uncivilised and lethal species ever to inhabit the planet and looks forward to the day when the inevitable asteroid slams into the earth and wipes them out thus giving nature the opportunity to start again.
There's a vote winner.
He was a raving arse promoted to his level of incompetence. Not that I'm glad he's dead though.
He amused me, therefore he's a good man. Much like Alan Clark amused me, and was therefore a good man. I can ignore some of their less sensible moments (be it nutty animal rights nonsense or Hitler fetishes) if they've got entertainment value. Plus old Tony put down an EDM congratulating Brighton and Hove Albion on getting promoted a few years back, so he's OK in my book.

Ah, the frivolous EDM. A bargain at £1,014 of taxpayers' money a throw.
There'd be a lot less of this crap if MPs had to put a pound in the pot every time they wanted to sense of meaningless well-being.
I remember Stephen Pound tabling one to commemorate the death Bill Hicks which, while the sentiment being entirely admirable, is a twattish thing to do.
