I fully expect to see this very fact in Private Eye this week...
I dream of a happy future in which a public enquiry can be assembled to investigate everything that happens.
I don't see what's so uncontroversial about saying that it's not yet time for a public enquiry. If they're still refusing to hold one in a couple of years time then the "waste of police time" excuse will start to look flimsy, but it kind of makes sense at the moment.
This is a lose-lose issue for the government: either they hold one, and get accused of being enquiry obssessed and wasting public time and money; or they don't, and they look like they're hiding something.
But John, they are enquiry obssessed, and they probably are hiding something.
