But on the plus side, the government has enough Tamiflu for all essential citizens in the brave new world. I don't know about you, but I'm pinning on my red rosette as we speak.
It'll be great - Tony and his select group of loyal Labour party members (they've got enough doses for all of them plus their families, membership's dropped so low), locked in some underground bunker as us flu-infected mere mortals stagger around like runny-nosed Romero rejects desperately trying to catch a healthy Labourite and eat their juicy brains.
Tamiflu really does sound like some sinister drug from a crappy 1970s horror sci-fi, doesn't it?
is Tamiflu even going to be any use if/when this hits?
Well, Tamiflu resistant strains have been found in South-east Asia already, so maybe, and maybe not. Any widespread treatment will lead to resistance quickly developing though, so the New Labourites might end up fucking us all over for the next pandemic by surviving this one. But it is the only available anti-viral, so it's your best chance, unless you have a shotgun, 6 months worth of tinned food, and a secluded post-WW2 nuclear bunker somewhere in rural England to run to.
Well, the govt claims to have enough for 25% of the population, so unless the Labour Party's membership has taken a radical turn for the better there should be quite a lot left over (especially when the consensus seems to be that somewhere around 30% of the population is likely to get ill.)
And, as said before, this is a problem for poultry farmers unless/until a virus that can spread person-to-person appears. H5N1 has been knocking around SE Asia for three years, and in an area with two billion people living at incredibly high population density (and often around birds) there have been, what, 100 human cases if that.
Sure, it's worrying, but I'd like to be excused the panic.
Even were I to believe their claims that suddenly they've got twenty times what everyone thought they had, there's also their added admission that they don't know if it'll be effective.
But more importantly - get into the spirit of things! Enjoy the apocalypic terror! Buy a shotgun and sit out on your porch taking pot-shots at anyone going by, just on the off-chance they're a carrier. It'll be great! (Assuming you've got a porch, that is... and plenty of whisky - it's the best way to kill the germs - FACT.)
