- Bird flu confirmed in Romania. Tomorrow the test results on the virus found in Turkey should reveal whether it's the deadly H5N1 strain - with its 50% fatality rate. And still the government has only 900,000 doses of the vaccine.
Go on, everyone - sign the pledge - we haven't had a good old-fashioned mass panic opportunity for - ooooh! at least a couple of months now...

This doesn't seem to be a development - it's been obvious from the word go that it's bird flu, the question is whether it's H5N1. Anyway, the real question is whether it will get the ability to transmit between people, which is most likely to happen in SE Asia (where all the cases of bird-to-human transmission have been).
Apparently the romanian stuff hadn't been confirmed for definite until late last night - though anyone with a brain could tell that it was.
Of course, according to our dear government, the chances of it reaching Britain are remote... Remote my arse.
And their latest wheeze is apparently to try and catch wildfowl before they enter the country. Presumably with big nets. Sounds like a plan - perhaps they could adapt the nets afterwards to keep out terrorists and illegal immigrants?
So the next question is, what do we do about it? I mean, thinking more selfishly than lobbying the government, my partner's family are all lying through their teeth to get private prescriptions for some drug which hasn't yet been proven effective against this strain. Do I stick to the moral high ground or do I join the panicing (middle-class) masses?
