- More proof, as if any were needed, that Charles Clarke is a fucking tool:
"The Prime Minister was elected earlier this year in a very strong election result. He said he would go before the end of this Parliament - that means by May 2010 - and he will go towards the end of the Parliament. So, you know, just spring a new, untested leader on the public right before a general election, giving them no chance to formulate their own policies, appoint their own people to the positions they want, or to allow the public a chance to get used to them? Genius.
"I would urge him myself to stay right up towards the end of the Parliament"
(Although actually, considering the Tories are still likely to be fucked by 2009/10 and the voting system won't have been reformed, Labour could put a donkey in a leotard up for PM and still get in with a majority - maybe Clarke's got a point after all...)
Update: More guff on this at the Guardian - vaguely interesting, actually, which makes a change from the usual Blair vs. Brown stuff that gets churned out whenever any paper's got space to fill...
Update 2: For fuck's sake - won't somebody rid me of this troublesome Home Secretary? It would appear that he's now proposing to execute every single teenager in the country - that's the only way I can envisage that he'll be able to "eliminate disrespect and antisocial behaviour". What a twat.

More disturbingly, from the same article, he justifies torture of terrorism suspects as a way to keep the public happy. Crazy.
Giving the country an untried leader isn't such a dumb idea - IMO, the later Brown takes over the better. He'll get a bit of a honeymoon period - they all do - politico types are funny like that when it comes to optimism, but the longer he is in power, the more his popularity will decline. Optimal time to take over would be 6-12 months before the election
Andrew - the torture thing's a given these days - he actually seems to have toned down his rhetoric somewhat since the speech he gave to the European Parliament a couple of weeks back...
Paul - sort of agreed, but I reckon Gordy needs to get out of the Treasury asap. There's been a lot more moaning about his handling of the economy recently - if he switches over to number 10 he can, at a push, blame any economic slowdown on a combination of Blair's foreign ventures and his successor, rather than take all the fall himself.
I also reckon he'd need more than a year to get the message over about what he's going to do differentlyl - 6-12 months will only give him time to blame everything on "8 years of the Tony" - a handy new riff on the previous Labour mantra of "18 years of the Tories" which should stand him in good stead for at least a couple of terms in office...
Either that or they could go with the donkey in a leotard idea. I quite like that one...
I forgot about the impending economic doom. Good point. The great thing about the Treasury for prospective PMs is that they can stick to talking about economics, which no one understands/cares about, so in effect they are talking about nothing.
All these problems... it must be tough being in NL
