RIP Robin Cook

Well that was unexpected. I didn't always agree with Cook. But I did meet him once, while he was Leader of the House and I was a but a lowly researcher for an opposition MP. And he was thoroughly nice. I'm rather shocked, and rather saddened. Even though he may have been marginalised in the Labour party of recent years, it is a loss to them and a loss to the country.

A loss to us all , leaving his personal life aside ...

Robin was a rare phenomenon a politician that told us the truth and resigned with integrity

Rest in peace Robin

Yeah, even though he was obviously arrogant, intellectually vain, and sometimes pompous.... I kinda liked him. Dunno why. Perhaps because I used him for a joke in my memoirs, when I said that all vaginas bear a certain resemblance to Robin Cook.
Er, I hope that's not distasteful.
Anyway. He was a dude, after a fashion. And principled too...
RIP.

Robin was above all politically courageous and intellectually honest: he was one of the first politicians to see "neo-conservatism" for what it is: a deadly mix of Trotskyite Marxism, Likudnik Jewish nationalism and extreme monetarist free market economic theory.

Robin Cook brilliantly ridiculed Dick Cheney and Ariel Sharon´s plans to "privatise" global security and diplomacy...

Following the tragic events of July 7, some of Tony Blair´s senior political advisers have suggested we hire Israeli "security experts" and other Pharisaic mercenaries- they´re far more efficient than Scotland Yard´s bureaucrats and know real well how to massacre Muslim civilians and bulldoze ancient mosques and churches. And they have impecable credentials with a 57 years track record in the towns of Palestine and south Lebanon- not to mention they´ve successfully exported their macabre knowhow to Iraq´s "Sunni triangle"

If Tony Blair succeeds in implementing his neocon/neo-Hitlerite amendments to the Human Rights Acts, we might eventually be able to import Hebrew expertise to combat "urban Muhammedan insurgency" in the streets of Brixton and Bradford.
What a beautiful world this will be

I think Dr Vick has a point.

In many ways, Blair fits the (neo or otherwise) classical definition of fascism:
1) he forged fake intelligence (remember his "dossier" describing Saddam´s sci-fi army of deadly drones?) just like Count Ciano before Italian troops invaded Ethiopia (the Duce´s diplomats had produced a dossier "proving" Haile Selasieh´s "imminent" plans for war in Somalia)

2) he is now cynically trying to exploit a traumatised public´s "changed mood" following "crimes comitted by Muslims" to pass liberticide laws- just like Hitler did after "leftwing activists" burned the German Parliament, just like Franco did after "subversive" Asturian workers went on strike in 1936

Robin Cook is absolutely no loss to the world.

His resignation over the Iraq war was stuff-all to do with principles. If he was so outraged about the illegality of the Iraq war, then why did he not resign over the equally illegal bombing of Serbia? Our involvement in the Balkan war was just as aggressive and illegal as that in Iraq.

Oh, and how can we forget the joy of his "ethical foreign policy"?

You´re right MT
Re: your second point, you might have added just like Bush and Cheney did right after 911 with their neo-fascist Israeli-inspired "Patriot" Act

One shouldn´t blame British Muslims for what has happened in London since 7 July

Robin Cook knew that all that talk about the “Muhammedan fifth column” or the “bearded enemy within” was simply zionist bullshit on a massive scale

Robin Cook was probably the most intelligent man I ever had the privilege to have a conversation with. I wish I had been more sober so I could have appreciated it more, and learned more from it.
