- Non-news of the day: I'll quit Commons at next election, Blair tells family and friends.
Well, dur... Did anyone seriously expect him to do a Ted Heath and loyally serve his constituents from the backbenches for another quarter century? And surviving on a measly MP's salary? With his mortgage(s)?
As soon as he announced he was going to quit the leadership it was obvious he'd be heading to better-paid climes. This is nearly as much of a non-story as those "terrorists will try and strike again" ones - patently fucking obvious if you use your brain for even half a sodding second.
Update: Downing Street denies the story - so it MUST be true...
Tuesday update: Ha! Told you it must be true if Downing Street denies it...

It's slightly more of a story than you make out: he also says he's probably going to quit politics, i.e. he won't be going for European Commissioner, which is what my money was on until today…
Ah, but you're forgetting - this is Tony Blair saying this, the same man who promised that he wouldn't introduce university tuition fees, then did, and then that he wouldn't introduce top-up fees, then did, etc. etc. etc.
In fact, considering he keeps on going on about quitting it's probably more likely that he's going to carry on as Prime Minister until the day he drops dead...
Follow the money, I think. The man's entire history suggests that he wants to end up seriously rich (OK, he is seriously rich from where I stand, but, you know...). I'd bet on a few directorates worth £1m or so a year. Oh, and a Knight of the Garter of course.
Chris
Think a little bit more imaginatively. Our Dear Leader isn't going to settle for being a mere European Commissioner.
Tony Blair, first President of the United States of Europe. Doesn't it just roll off the tongue.
