Depression

This is what is known in the trade as fucking awful. More than 640 dead, 230 injured in Baghdad thanks to mere RUMOURS of possible suicide bombers, following mortar attacks on a crowd of religious pilgrims.

It should by now be obvious that the people launching these attacks have no more claim to be a muslim than I do. Sooner or later it should also become obvious that if you are living in a state of fear and panic, this sort of tragedy becomes, even if not on this horrific scale, inevitable. Lessons to be learned for Sir Ian "terrorists are everywhere and we can't stop them" Blair, perhaps?

Still, political points should not be made over the bodies of the dead. But I hold out little hope of any western nations offering anything like the kind or quantity of messages of support and condolence to Iraq over this that London received in the wake of our bombings. Hey, it may be twelve times the death toll (as it stands), but they aren't westerners, so what does it matter, eh?

I guess we can look forward to the usual ITV report on this incident.

"And on to Iraq, where a stampede amongst Shi'ite pilgrims left more than 640 dead and 230 injured.

No Britons were hurt in the incident.

And finally... an amusing story about about skateboarding duck with a false leg."

While we're on the subject of Iraqi casualties lets not forget that Us air-strikes on houses in the Northern city of Qaim succeeded in killing 'Abu Islam', who they beleive to be an 'Al-Qaeda operative' and 'several other terrorists'...

... and around 40 other people who as far as can be told had absolutely bugger all to do with terrorism and are therefore merely a bit of unimportant collateral damage.

Better still the name 'Abu Islam' is apparently an alias used by several different militants - some sort of Islamic 'Spartacus' thing no doubt - so the Yanks have no real idea who exactly it is they've just bombed and it could just as easily be Abu Islam the goatherd and Abu Islam the terrorist.

But, never mind, they're only foreigners, eh?

While whether suicide bombers have the right to call themselves Muslim or not is something for theologens to debate they do call themselves Muslim. They consider there acts be be justified by, and in the name of, Islam. The Wahabi Islamists also claim the Muslims that they kill have no right to call themselves Muslim, which is how they justify killing them. If we are to ever stop them then we must say what we are fighting against, and not claim that it is something else.
