Shaking off the bonds of colonial oppression
The 4th July. Independence Day. Means everything to Americans, tit all to anyone else (including us Brits, who lost a bunch of our prime colonies thanks to the thing and now have to pay through the nose to have a nice smoke.)
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Unless, of course, you're African.

Not sure that's fair - the only way that the US restricts Africa from life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is in trade subsidies, which Bush is offering to drop.
Aside from that, they are the largest donor of aid in the world, in absolute terms, so arguably they're doing more than anyone else to promote those ideals.
The only way? Bullshit.
Heaven knows Alex, we should have followed the British lead in treatment of Africans.
Nosey was right about the first part. Losing those tea duties was a bitch.
