The US calls on the EU to declare Hezbollah a terrorist organisation and label it a threat to international security.
Well yes, yes it most probably is both.
But isn't it a tad rich considering that it's taken until now for the US to start giving Sinn Fein the cold shoulder? Considering that one of it's most prominent leaders is a convicted terrorist who still appears to be making threats to the bereaved family of an IRA victim, might it not be about bloody time the US added the IRA to their list of terrorist organisations and finally cut off US funding to Sinn Fein?

I have met very few people in my time who are willing to state categorically that it is always wrong to use violence for political purposes. Anyone not willing to make this statement is a hypocrite if they call particular organisations terrorist.
Serf...
Violence is only justifiable when you have a just and possible cause and there is no soft (political solution) available. These conditions are subjective to a degree but there are cases that are obvious.
The IRA is a terrorist or criminal organization and should be allowed no legal license to solicit funds in the US and should have all assets in the US frozen. The terrorism in NI has not been justifiable for over 20 years, since political solutions to the problems have been possible. Much like Hezbollah, which must admit that Israel is not likely to go away quietly in the night, the IRA must disarm and allow Sinn Fein to represent it's political objectives. The Protestants in Ulster aren't going to just vanish either; deal with it. What the IRA says it wants is not a possible solution and they know it. That makes demanding it a sure method of sustaining their control over their own population. It's just tough to give up your guns, clubs, and knives when they guarantee your income and social status. Ask some Sicilians.
Hezbollah could legitimicize themselves the same way... don't hold your breath on either. The Hezbollah leader is a shill for the Syrian and Iranian interests and Gerry Adams in the Lucky Luciano of Ireland.
But stranger things have happened. If the good looking chicks keep coming out for the opposition, they're toast.
You know what, that's a good criticism. I agree with you.
What the IRA says it wants is not a possible solution and they know it.
The IRA wants to see an end to British colonialism in the north of Ireland. Why is that not possible?
