Maybe this hasn't been thought through properly...
"Vote Blair get Brown" is being hinted at as a key phrase in the Tories' forthcoming election campaign. Of course this seems to ignore the obvious riposte from LAbour (or indeed anyone else): Vote Howard, get Howard.

This does seem to be working... to a point. On talking to my girlfriend's mother (an instinctive and traditional Tory, though not a recent Conservative voter) at the weekend, she made the 'Vote Tony, get Bennites' argument. Honest.
The fox-hunting debate has spooked people like her into worrying that all except Blair in the Labour party are secretly planning a return to the 70s, the three day week, strikes and the summary abolition of private education and healthcare.
This maybe less likely than Elvis winning the Derby on Shergar, but if it makes them vote Conservative, it is working. And seriously, they will vote Howard (however much they don't like him) rather than some youthful Dennis Skinner-alike.
