Saturday update: So much for hope... It was pretty much inevitable once he had been captured, and there wasn't much that the British government could do. But he shouldn't have been in the middle of a warzone in the first place. The reason he was is because Tony Blair committed us to an illegal war in the face of massive public opposition.
